Hardwood flooring is a popular feature in many houses due to its elegant and sophisticated beauty.  Today, there are many different kinds of wood species and colors to choose from when installing new floors, which allow you find to the perfect fit for your tastes.

With the variety of choices available, what do you need to look for when it comes to shopping for the right hardwood flooring?

  • Durability – Make sure that your wood is strong enough to last for many years. All wood is strong to a certain degree, but wood from younger trees doesn’t always promise the same long-lasting durability a older woods. In fact, if not carefully maintained, younger wood can be easily damaged and require more frequent replacement.  Choose materials from older woods so you can be assured of their strength and long term functionality. Reclaimed woods is a great option.
  • Safety for the family and the environment – Safety should always be a factor when it comes to buying decisions. Is the material you’re considering safe for you and your family?  Is this also safe for the environment?
  • Low maintenance – You don’t want to spend all of your time cleaning and maintaining your hardwood floors. In fact, you should be able to sit back and relax and admire their beauty. Different species of wood require different levels of maintenance, so choose one that is easier to care for.
  • Continuity – Will the wood design you’re considering match the overall interior look of the room?  Wood is an incredibly flexible material when it comes to design because it goes with traditional and modern alike.  Carefully consider the other design and color elements of your home and choose a wood that will complement that well.

Adding Beauty and Comfort to Your Home Using Hardwood Flooring

Adding wooden materials to your home creates sophistication and beauty that is beyond compare. The natural appearance offers warmth to a space, and the lovely facade presents an elegance often associated with  luxurious homes.

However, some homeowners believe that wood materials require extensive upkeep and constant maintenance. They believed that in order to enjoy the beauty of hardwood materials, they need to spend a lot of time and money to maintain them.  False! Having hardwood materials at home need not require more extensive maintenance than other materials. In fact, hardwood lumber often requires less maintenance.

While you enjoy the beauty of your hardwood flooring, you can keep it in great shape by applying a floor finish such as Bona-Kemi (offered by Superior Hardwoods & Millwork). You can also recoat your floor when it loses its shine to make it look like new again without replacing the wood itself.  This easy maintenance will give you the full benefit of having beautiful hardwood floors without robbing you of your time and effort with constant cleaning and repair.

Wooden decks are also a beautiful addition to any home and can also be particularly great if you enjoy outdoor parties and lounging. Wooden decks may look like they need a lot of maintaining after being exposed to sun and rain, but with proper staining and sealing, your wooden deck can provide you with sturdy durability while you enjoy having summer barbeques and gatherings around your fire pit. One particular great sealant we recommend is Seal Once which will help to protect your deck from water and moisture damage (as well as sun exposure). Seal once is offered by Superior Hardwoods & Millwork of Montana.

If you are looking for high-quality hardwood lumber to use for your flooring or deck, Superior Hardwood has a variety of options to choose from, including reclaimed wood, which is not only guaranteed strong and long-lasting, but is also eco-friendly.

Creating an Eco-friendly Deck

Decks are a very popular feature in homes because they provide the perfect place to enjoy nature and outdoor dining in a comfortable and clean way. Decks are great places to host outdoor parties with family and friends, star gazing at night, or simply relaxing after a day’s work.

When it comes to adding a deck to your house, most people consider functionality, style, and safety, but another thing to also consider is how eco-friendly it is.

There are several ways you can make your deck eco-friendly. Care and maintenance is a great place to start. For instance, are you using eco-friendly cleaners on your deck? Are you using too much water to clean your deck?  While it is important to clean and maintain your deck regularly in order to ensure it lasts a long time, there are ways to modify your procedures so they are more environmentally-friendly. Superior Hardwood offers Seal Once Deck cleaner (all wood cleaner) to clean your deck so you don’t have to worry about what you are using to clean your deck.

If you have not yet built your deck, another thing to consider are the materials you use. There are many decking materials out there, but for wooden decks, what could be more eco-friendly than using reclaimed wood? Reclaimed wood, also known as recycled wood, is basically reused wood obtained from old structures like buildings, boats, and barns. This kind of wood helps preserve nature because it reduces the demand for deforestation, which cuts down newer trees in the forest. Furthermore, reclaimed wood helps prevent the buildup of used wood in rivers and landfills because you are reusing it instead of discarding it.

As for the character marks on the wood, each mark creates a rich history that adds to the overall elegance of your deck. You can consider these marks as added customized design that can never be replicated by new woods.  Reclaimed wood is a beautiful option for decking, and even the wood floors in your home. It’s visual uniqueness will make your deck stunning and one-of-a-kind.  And, in addition, it is also incredibly durable because the wood has already hardened against the test of time.

If you are looking for superior quality decking materials, Superior Hardwood can give you exactly what you need. Superior Hardwood offers two brands of reclaimed wood decking – Tigerwood Decking and IPE (Diamond Decking).  Tigerwood is made from Astronium spp—an exotic hardwood known for its natural durability, long lifespan and resistance to decay. For more information on either of these decking brands, feel free to contact us!

Warning Signs That Your Log Home Needs Repair

Log cabins, with their warm cozy atmospheres, are perfect as vacation houses and feeling closer to nature. However, they require a lot of maintenance, especially if damage isn’t addressed right away. For example, wood rot, if left untreated, can lead to total deterioration.

In order to achieve a longer life for your log cabin, it is important to attend to repairs as soon as possible.  For you to easily detect where repairs are needed, you need to know the warning signs of damage. Identifying these factors will help you salvage damaged wood immediately and apply proper repairs or replacement before it is too late.

Below are some examples of the warning signs that you need to look for when it comes to maintaining your log cabin:

  • Your stairs and floors are no longer level with each other. This is due to wood shifting, which is a structural issue, or wood warping, which may be caused by external factors that you will need to address.
  • Cracks exist in your logs. Unless you are using reclaimed wood, which will have cracks from the start, cracks in your logs are signs that they are gradually weakening.
  • Sawdust, cobwebs, and bite marks are evident in the wood. This tells you that it is being eaten or chewed by animals or bugs. You will need to execute proper pest control around the house.
  • Some parts of the wood are already rotting. Check the area immediately to determine what is causing it.
  • Mold and mildew are present. This signals that your wood is damaged by water. Unless you implement proper repair or replacement, it will contaminate other logs as well.

To ensure long-lasting hardwood lumber, it is best to protect it with a proper water sealant, so it will not be easily damaged by water. Seal Once is an excellent water proofer that adds a layer of protection to your hardwood and it is available at Superior Hardwood.  Apply it after replacing your damaged lumber to ensure it will last longer.
